Dressing between East and West: Inter-textuality of Fashion and Literature

Date: 12 Oct 2015

Time: 10:30 – 12:30

Venue: D1-LP-06

In the beginning of the 20th century, Paul Poiret designed a high-waisted rope dress inspired by Eastern aura and his wife’s slim figure,  the image of natural bodies re-entered the public scene and women abandoned their corsets gradually.  Since then masculine and feminine representations has been wrestling  in female fashion, signalling the parallel changes of women’s style and rights. In this talk, fashion history and Eileen Chang’s Note on Dressing was being studied together in order to investigate the gender revolution brought by fashion and literature in both the east and west.

It is about six Taiwanese fathers of children with rare diseases who are not willing to let fate defeat them. They started to learn music and even form a rock band with the goal to perform in the popular Hohaiyan Rock Festival. The film also documents their daily lives with their children, showing their trials and tribulations.

We are also delighted to have the bands guitarist Papa Li as a guest to share his experience and to perform for us.

Consumption of popular culture is often associated with corporal desire, it is therefore seldom an object of serious consideration. He will also raise issues in concern with anime consumers.
